The Sustainable Stylist: Roberta Lee

Hi, I'm Roberta

I’ve been a passionate advocate for sustainable style since 2015.  I watched the documentary the True Cost and I was forever changed.  I am by no means perfect, but I try my best to live by the values that are important to me, and that extends itself to my clothes.

I have carefully crafted my signature style and curated a wardrobe that I am now super proud of and one that my future self would be excited about too.  Having that clarity on my style and knowing what to wear is so confidence-boosting – and I want that for you too.

For me empowerment isn’t just about looking good on the inside, it’s about digging deep  creating your personal style based on your core values.

Everyone deserves the chance to look good, feel good, and now with all my tips, resources, and the online course – you can do all of that and be kind to the planet too – that’s called the triple win.  So, are you in?

I was blissfully unaware of the impact the fashion industry has been having on our planet for years.   I am not one to preach scary facts and try and scare you into changing your attitude towards clothes and shopping, but I do Invite you to just look at a few facts (see below).  Hopefully, these help you understand why I believe that that knowing our personal style is important.   And let’s face it, most people never get taught how to dress, or shop.  But WHAT IF if more people knew this?  More people knowing their personal style, how to dress and shop for their body shape and natural colouring??  It would be so much easier for everyone to create a sustainable wardrobe.  And that’s where I come in.  if I can help more people create their personal style, and help curate a sustainable wardrobe – I can do my bit to help save the planet.

Second to oil, the clothing and textile industry is the largest polluter in the world. Using more of our natural resources faster than they can regenerate. So sad isn’t it?

An estimated £140 million worth (350,000 tonnes) of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year.  Many items are made from synthetic fibres that take 100s of years to decompose.

Extending the life of clothes by just nine extra months of active use would reduce carbon, water and waste footprints by around 20-30% each.  Outfit repeating  & clothing care can help with that.

MY Fundamental ‘Why’

My fundamental ‘why’ has always been to make people feel good about themselves.  After experiencing a massive self-confidence-crushing identity crisis in 2014,  I slowly rebuilt my confidence and built a business I love, and focusing on a values-based personal style has been instrumental to my success.

In 2015 I set up Roberta Style Lee to simply inspire confidence and empower women.   But very quickly my ‘why‘ started to grow into something much bigger, the more self-aware I became and the more I learnt about the fashion industry.

I reconnected with issues related to gender equality, environmental issues, animal welfare, and workers’ rights.   And it struck me,  I could not talk about empowering women if I was wearing clothing made by women, exploited and forced to work in the garment industry without any rights.  This is quite literally the opposite of  empowering women. And so my journey into ethical fashion began and I started to ask #WhoMadeMyClothes

In 2017 I set up a little UK-based ethical fashion directory, now known as Ethical Brand Directory, which is part of a larger vision, the Ethical Brand Network, which includes the Directory, but also a Boutique, and an online Academy.

I knew I could make a broader positive social impact through my work.  I have used Roberta Style Lee as a platform to raise awareness of ethical fashion, and why sustainable style is so important.  If we want to save our future planet,  we need to empower people to make changes to how they dress and shop, and what businesses they support with their money.

I  have taken to the stage, been on TV, and written for leading publications on why Building a Sustainable Wardrobe is so important.

empower and inspire

My job is simple, it’s about positive empowerment and inspiring you to take control of your style narrative, and live a life of purpose. .

Having a consciously created personal style and a carefully curated wardrobe (and one that is aligned with your values and lifestyle) means you can enjoy your wardrobe for many years to come.  Good for you,  good for the planet,  good for the people that make our clothes.
