The Sustainable Stylist
Hi, I'm Roberta I'm passionate about sustainable style
If you’re new here you might just know me as The Sustainable Stylist, I’ve been a passionate advocate for sustainable style since 2015. I watched the documentary the True Cost and I was forever changed. I am by no means perfect, but I try my best to live by the values that are important to me, and that extends itself to my clothes, brands and businesses I work with.
I have carefully crafted my signature style and curated a sustainable wardrobe that I am now super proud of and one that my future self would be excited about too. Having that clarity on my style and knowing what to wear is so confidence-boosting – and I want that for you too.
For me empowerment isn’t just about looking good on the inside, it’s about digging deep and creating your style based on your core values.
Everyone deserves the chance to look good and feel good, and now with all my tips, resources, and the online course – you can do all of that and be kind to the planet too – that’s called the triple win.
So, the question is are you in?
WHY IS BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE WARDROBE SO IMPORTANT?
Until recently, I didn’t fully grasp the fashion industry’s environmental impact. A decade ago, I started to learn more about the industry and I felt deeply compelled to change. I’m not here to instil fear with alarming statistics but to share some eye-opening facts (see below).
Understanding these facts reinforces my belief in the importance of defining our personal style.
Let’s acknowledge that most of us weren’t taught how to dress or shop effectively. But imagine if more individuals were empowered with this knowledge – knowing their style, dressing for their body shape, and choosing colours that suit them? It’s a pivotal step towards crafting sustainable wardrobes. That’s where I step in. By assisting people in discovering their personal style and curating sustainable wardrobes, I contribute my share to safeguarding our planet
Second to oil, the clothing and textile industry is the largest polluter in the world. Using more of our natural resources faster than they can regenerate. So sad isn’t it?
An estimated £140 million worth (350,000 tonnes) of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year. Many items are made from synthetic fibres that take 100s of years to decompose.
Extending the life of clothes by just nine extra months of active use would reduce carbon, water and waste footprints by around 20-30% each. Outfit repeating & clothing care can help with that.
My why: my journey into sustainable style
At the core of my mission is empowering people and brands to feel good about who they are and what they do, and to protect and preserve our future planet.
My journey started amidst a personal struggle—an identity crisis back in 2014. Whilst rediscovering my confidence, I identified with the importance of a wardrobe that helped me look good, and feel good about who I was. I built a business with a simple aim: to inspire confidence and empower women to utilise style as a tool for success.
Roberta Style Lee emerged in 2015 with a pivotal ingredient being values-based styling, where confidence and sustainable style were my focus.
However, as I delved deeper into my own self-awareness and shopping habits and the impact of the fashion industry, my purpose expanded.
I began reconnecting with issues such as gender equality, environmental concerns, animal welfare, and workers’ rights. This led me to question the clothing I wore. How could I advocate for empowering women while supporting a fashion industry exploiting its female workers? This realisation shifted my focus and I journeyed into ethical fashion and I joined the Fashion Revolution #WhoMadeMyClothes movement.
By 2017, I had established the Ethical Brand Directory in the UK. This venture broadened my social impact by raising awareness of ethical fashion and the significance of sustainable style at a more global level.
Over the years I’ve leveraged my platform to champion ethical and sustainable fashion brands and emphasise the importance of sustainability.
My stage presence, television appearances, and contributions to prominent publications are all dedicated to advocating the necessity of building a sustainable wardrobe, and a sustainable and equitable fashion future for us all.
empower and inspire
At the heart of my work lies a simple mission: to inspire positive empowerment, and long-lasting change not just for individuals but also for brands and businesses.
Empowering individuals and inspiring businesses towards sustainable choices— this is the driving force behind my work, a win-win for everyone involved.
My goal is to guide you in taking charge of your style narrative while encouraging sustainable choices.
Whether it’s crafting a consciously curated personal style or advising brands on sustainable commercial styling, the essence remains the same. A thoughtfully created wardrobe, aligned with values, benefiting our planet and the people who make our clothes.
