Roberta Lee in TRT World on Buy Nothing Day, Black Friday and Conscious Consumption
Why mindful consumption matters more than seasonal shopping events
Featured on TRT World, Roberta Lee discussed the growing conversation around Buy Nothing Day and the cultural impact of Black Friday on consumer behaviour. The interview explored how habits of overconsumption have become normalised and why many people are beginning to question whether continual purchasing leads to greater satisfaction. Drawing on her work as founder of Ethical Brand Directory and a sustainable stylist, Roberta encouraged a more considered approach to shopping. Rather than rejecting fashion altogether, she advocated making purchasing decisions with greater awareness, considering longevity, craftsmanship and whether new purchases genuinely add value to an existing wardrobe.

Roberta Lee on conscious consumption

Black Friday often focuses our attention on price. I believe a more useful question is value. A lower price does not automatically make something a better purchase, just as a higher price does not guarantee quality. The decisions that have the greatest impact are usually made before we reach the checkout. They begin with understanding whether something genuinely deserves a place in our wardrobe.
Style isn't about clothes. It's about making intentional choices that reflect who you are, what you value and how you want to live. Buying less is not about deprivation. It's about creating space for better decisions that serve you for years rather than moments.
