Roberta Lee for Pure London on Sustainability, Fashion and Future Trends
Why sustainability should become part of fashion's definition of quality, not a separate conversation
Invited to contribute a thought leadership article for Pure London, Roberta Lee shared her perspective on the future of sustainable fashion, changing consumer expectations and the role both brands and retailers play in shaping a more responsible industry. Rather than presenting sustainability as a passing trend, Roberta argued that the most successful fashion businesses would be those with a clear purpose, greater transparency and a commitment to creating products designed to last. She encouraged brands to think beyond marketing claims and focus instead on authenticity, craftsmanship and long-term value. The article reinforced Roberta's position as one of the UK's leading voices on sustainable fashion, offering practical insight for retailers, buyers and brands navigating an industry in transition.

“More of us are looking for ways to identify with ourselves and those around us. Brands that push a clear social or environmental agenda through their business make it easier to build a rapport with. When a brand's values align with our own, it reinforces trust. We find our tribe, we buy into it.”

Roberta Lee on redefining luxury
Updated 2026
When this article was published, sustainability was still often presented as a separate category within fashion. I think we've moved beyond that. Today, the conversation is about discernment. The brands that will define the future won't simply be the ones making sustainability claims. They'll be the ones creating products with integrity, exceptional craftsmanship and genuine longevity. Responsibility should be embedded within quality, not marketed as an additional feature. Luxury is no longer defined solely by exclusivity or price.
We all have different experiences, different aspirations and different definitions of what luxury means. For me, luxury is having the discernment to choose well. To buy fewer things with greater intention. To invest in pieces that reflect your identity and continue to earn their place in your wardrobe year after year. Style isn't about clothes. It's about developing the confidence to recognise lasting value over temporary desire.
